India Hits Clean Energy Milestone: 236 TWh from Renewables in 2025

India’s clean energy sector hit a major milestone in 2025, producing 236 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable power in just six months. This record output shows India’s accelerating transition to green energy, reducing fossil fuel dependence while moving closer to its net-zero 2070 goals.

Solar and Wind Drive Growth

  • Solar power surged 25%, fueled by massive solar farms, rooftop installations, and small-scale rural solar setups.
  • Wind power grew 29%, with offshore projects going live and states like Tamil Nadu expanding onshore turbines.

This rapid growth reflects India’s focus on scaling up renewable energy capacity across regions.

Policy Push and Tech Upgrades

Government policies played a major role:

  • PLI schemes supported domestic solar manufacturing.
  • Simplified land-use rules sped up project approvals.
  • Advanced solar panels improved efficiency, while smarter wind turbines boosted output.

These steps made renewable projects more viable, reliable, and attractive for investors.

Decline in Fossil Fuels

India’s clean energy surge has already cut into fossil fuel dependence:

  • Coal output fell 3%.
  • Gas plants crashed by one-third in just six months.

This shift means fewer carbon emissions and reduced reliance on costly imported gas and coal.

Rising Share of Renewables

Renewables now account for 25% of India’s power mix, up from 21% last year. Experts predict the share could surpass 30% during peak summer months, proving that clean energy is no longer backup power but a core part of India’s energy grid.

Why It Matters for India

  1. Energy Independence – Lower reliance on foreign coal and gas saves billions.
  2. Climate Commitments – Supports India’s net-zero by 2070 pledge under the Paris Agreement.
  3. Economic Growth – Thousands of new jobs in solar and wind projects, especially in rural towns.
  4. Health Benefits – Cleaner air reduces respiratory illnesses and healthcare costs.

Conclusion: India’s Global Clean Energy Example

India’s record-breaking 236 TWh renewable power milestone in 2025 marks a turning point in its green energy journey. With strong policies, investments, and technology upgrades, India is emerging as a global leader in clean energy adoption — proving that large-scale renewable transitions are possible without slowing economic growth.
